Pragmatic Spirituality incorporates some of the most engaging of Wilmore's voluminous writings to reinstate a persistent theme: that black or Africentric faith transposes itself from basically numinous and ecstatic elements in African and African diasporic religions to the immediate and practical work of healing and empowering the poor and marginalized. This book presents a view of the Christian faith and life at variance with the quest for personal sanctity by emphasizing communal empowerment for humanization and justice. Each chapter has been thoroughly reviewed and where appropriate reworked for this volume in order to create a coherent work which reveals a consistent "pragmatic spirituality" in African and African American religious practice. The volume makes available for the first time several of Wilmore's previously unpublished essays, including a new chapter on womanist theology written for this book. Pragmatic Spirituality brings together some of his most compelling writings to speak to continuing issues in African American Christianity and black theology. Wilmore, an internationally renowned scholar of the history of the African American church, is one of the founders of black theology and author of Black Religion and Black Radicalism.

"The idea of spiritual motherhood is actually a very beautiful idea that you don't have to have a child, or be pregnant, or give birth, in order to have the qualities to be a spiritual mother… and to give those gifts that you have as a woman to another person in need," Campos-Duffy explained. In the first episode, Rachel Campos-Duffy and her daughters joined Shannon Bream to share a heartfelt conversation on the importance of spiritual motherhood. Shannon Bream’s new series, " The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak," based on her book of the same name, brings Rachel Campos-Duffy, Ainsley Earhardt and Kayleigh McEnany together, along with their families, to reflect on the importance of faith-filled female relationships that lead women to grow closer to Christ. Shannon Bream highlights the theme and importance of mothers and daughters in The Bible through basic story-telling in this 3 part episodic series featuring Kayleigh McEnany, Ainsley Earhardt and Rachel Campos-Duffy.Ī new, three-part Fox Nation series is reflecting on the special bond between mothers and daughters in the Bible – and applying those sacred relationships and teachings to modern-day mother-daughter pairings. Stream Shannon Bream's new Fox Nation series, 'Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak' Now yes, I do very much appreciate how in Sea of Tears Floella Benjamin shows her main protagonist Jasmine (who is almost 13) as totally furious and frustrated that her parents have decided to move the family from South London to Barbados, and that they did not bother to consult their daughter about this huge and major decision either and meet the fact Jasmine really does not AT ALL want to leave her life in England and in particular her many friends with pretty much a total lack of both understanding and empathy. I have to admit that I really am majorly conflicted regarding Floella Benjamin's 2011 young adult novel Sea of Tears, with there being one part of Sea of Tears that is thematically and textually totally and absolutely enjoyable and emotionally relatable (and with Sea of Tears also counting as OwnVoices, as the author is British but of Bajan background) but also way too much that I am finding textually annoying, frustrating and even kind of reading interest destroying. I'm no expert in literature, but I'd hazard a guess that any problems readers may have with this book are based in cultural differences rather than any literary failings with the book itself. The novel brims with new small joys and many moments of staggering poetic beauty, but then something happens….Īs Kenzaburo Oe has remarked, Takashi Hiraide’s work "really shines." His poetry, which is remarkably cross-hatched with beauty, has been acclaimed here for "its seemingly endless string of shape-shifting objects and experiences, whose splintering effect is enacted via a unique combination of speed and minutiae." A bestseller in France and winner of Japan’s Kiyama Shohei Literary Award, The Guest Cat, by the acclaimed poet Takashi Hiraide, is a subtly moving and exceptionally beautiful novel about the transient nature of life and idiosyncratic but deeply felt ways of living. So – is the real crime the fact that the Junior OED deleted the words, or the fact that we don’t get our kids out into a world where they need to know these words? Where they can collect acorns and make troll faces out of them, where they recognize what kind of bird is referenced in “Quoth the raven, ‘Nevermore'” where they know what the names of the flowers in their May baskets are, where they walk through a forest and can say to whoever they’re with, “Look at all the ferns…”? Can this story about words from nature being deleted from the dictionary be true? Yes, says Snopes, it’s true. One of the best discussions about these deletions/additions (filled with explanations from the OED Junior editors, and protests from people like Margaret Atwood) can be read at the Fact Check page of this Snopes site – Snopes is where people go to check out stories they can’t be sure are true. The words, along with others, were deleted from the OED Junior to make room for high-tech words that kids now use more frequently: block-graph, blog, broadband, bullet-point, celebrity, chatroom, committee, MP-3 player, voicemail.īut herons, ferns, newts – what happens when we lose the names for things?
